Program Description

Event Details

Registration required. Register only the children; adult attendance is assumed.

Join us for a sensory friendly storytime created specifically for children who enjoy movement, active engagement, and extra sensory input. This thirty minute session features upbeat songs, action rhymes, movement activities, and hands on sensory materials to support engagement and regulation. Children are welcome to move around the room, explore materials, vocalize, and participate in whatever way feels right for them, including taking breaks as needed.

Who This Program Is For

This storytime is intentionally created for children with disabilities, autistic children, and children with other neurodivergent support needs. To ensure that families who rely on sensory-friendly programming can fully benefit, we kindly ask that families without these needs attend one of our many other weekly storytimes. Thank you for helping us maintain an environment that truly supports the children this program is designed for.

Why Registration Is Required and Limited

To support a calm and predictable experience, this program is offered to a small group of children and their caregivers. Registration helps us:

• keep group size appropriate for sensory needs
• prepare the room with the right number of materials
• create an environment that feels comfortable rather than crowded
• ensure families who rely on sensory-friendly programming have space available

Unlike our general storytimes, this program depends on a consistent, smaller group size to maintain the environment that supports children with disabilities, autism, and other neurodivergent needs. Registration helps us honor that purpose and provide a positive experience for every child.

Accessibility Notes

This program is open to participants of all abilities.

The event will take place in the East Meeting Room, located at the front of the library, near the main entrance. Restrooms are located just outside the room in the hallway. The entrance to the room is approximately 68 feet from the front door. The restroom entrance is located 18 feet from the room entrance, in the adjacent hallway. The room may become loud at times, depending on the number of people present, and family-friendly music may be played. Lights will be at typical indoor brightness. Participants are welcome to enter and exit the space at any time based on their needs and comfort.

A variety of seating options, fidgets, and visual supports will be available. Staff are happy to answer questions in advance to help families prepare for their visit. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer McArdle at jmcardle@novilibrary.org and/or (248) 869-7239.
