****Adult Books Only

Founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000, the HUMAN LIBRARY is now hosted globally in over 80 countries. The model is that each person sharing their story is a book and, like in a library, the book can be checked out for a short time, generally 30 minutes, by our patrons as readers. Each “book” has a specific title and will be read about the experience in that topic. The reader interacts with the “book”, asking questions in order to gain a deeper understanding about the books personal experiences.

Novi Public Library is very excited to host this global phenomenon on calling attention to our prejudices and preconceived biases, that as humans we all inhabit in one way or another.

We are currently in the process of recruiting human "books"! In the best sense of the word, The Human Library is a library of people and their experiences with prejudice. However, instead of books, actual humans are on loan for conversations. The concept is about acknowledging and challenging prejudice that we all carry towards one another. For that reason, the Human Library creates a safe space for conversation where topics are a subject to taboo, marginalization, or stigma and can be openly addressed without any preconceived biases. The people acting as Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage, or life experiences. At the Human Library, we invite readers to ask questions and along with our Books engage in sharing Book's  personal experiences throughout dialog,  and curiosity. Interested in being a Human Book? We would love to see if you are a fit for one of our "books"!

To be considered to be "published" as a "book" you will be interviewed and you will be required to attend a training with the Human Library. We will be recruiting only 10 books at this time.
